For these photographs, I asked each of the athletes at a location of their choice, to complete an intense work out, usually alone or with the help of a few teammates only when necessary. I then photographed them immediately after, shooting somewhere between 100-200 photographs on medium format film, having them continuously work out every 5-10 pictures. My goal was to create portraits of them that spoke of their athleticism and courage, and for an intimate and intense connection to be shown by having the athlete stare directly back at the viewer while simultaneously being exhausted from working out. I also wanted to challenge the way most athletes are stereotypically photographed, and my aim was to create a more honest and authentic way of looking at these young people who also identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender.
For the exhibitions of Fearless Campus Tour, these photographs are printed anywhere from 13”x19” to over life size, at 4 ft. by 6ft., and while this web portfolio does not show the full range of detail and color that the large prints do, hopefully this does give you a good idea of the images in the project.
