So a lot has happened in the last month, and I apologize that I haven’t been able to update you all with more frequency. I just run an insanely crazy schedule of constantly taking pictures around the country, and then when I’m back in Southern California, I’m 110% with my photography students at UC Santa Barbara. Unfortunately, this blog/update forum gets neglected sometimes due to this, but I am really trying my best to keep you informed of how things are going with my work!
Alright.. super exciting news. I took photoshoot number 100 for Fearless this past weekend... I know a lot of people thought I was crazy when I told them that I wanted over one hundred athletes for the project... and now I have over 100.. the feeling I have right now is a bit odd.. I’m really quite happy but for some weird reason.. this doesn’t feel like the end at all.. maybe just the beginning of the end.
Some of you have also asked why I’m in Canada all of a sudden and what the heck is going on with the 2010 Winter Olympics... here’s the explanation as simply as I can possibly can explain the situation. Basically, I was approached a few months ago by PRIDE House, which is this organization dedicated to providing a safe space zone for LGBT athletes at the 2010 Olympic Games, who invited me to do a series of exhibitions of “Fearless” at their various venues at the Olympics. They were also instrumental in helping me win a grant from the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation in British Columbia, in order for me to expand the project to include about 20 or so athletes from Canada. Those pictures of Canadian high school and college LGBT athletes, along with the rest of “Fearless” will now be featured as part of their programming for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and I am SUPER excited about this. I just finished 11 photoshoots this weekend here in the Vancouver area of some really awesome college athletes here and I’m probably going to be in the Montreal area in a few weeks to continue this Canadian part of the project there on the East Coast of Canada.
And yes, I’m also working on new photoshoots for “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” all at the same time. I flew about 20,000 miles this past month... I laugh when I see the promotional trailers for George Clooney’s new film “Up in the Air”.. and I think to myself... try flying with 100 pounds of photo equipment on you Mr. Clooney...
Anyway, so a lot is going on... I’ll do a better job of keeping you all updated more on new and exciting things going on with me work. Please stay tuned!
