So a lot of this project obviously depends on “out” high school and collegiate athletes who play on their school’s sports teams and also openly self identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer, and are also willing to be photographed for it. So far, I have almost 60 athletes photographed, and my eventual goal is over 100. Anyway, I am ALWAYS looking for any high school or college athlete willing to be in the project (and also, if you have recently graduated but were out while in your sport, that is OK as well).
There is absolutely no cost to being photographed (I am actually surprised that I have been asked this a few times) and basically, just let me know where you are in the United States, and I will figure out a way to get there. (I also don’t screen athletes at all based on looks, school, location, etc.) My motto is that if you are willing to be in the project, I will figure out a way to get there and get the photographs taken. In fact, every athlete who has volunteered and winds up being photographed, winds up in the final project.
The photo shoot lasts maybe an hour or two, and I will basically have you exercise, work out, or play your sport for awhile, and then photograph a few rolls of film. Ideally, the shoot location would be somewhat private, as other people around can often be distracting. After I get the pictures back, I generally work with you to figure out which image you like the most, and I will always try to get you copies of the final images, even if it takes me a bit of time.
Best,
Jeff
